SOLIPSIUM Super resolution audio engine

Voice memos

Clean up a voice memo from an iPhone or Android phone.

Solipsium measures the noise, hum and clipping in a memo before it changes anything, and names what it found.

Drop a voice memo here

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

M4A, AMR, 3GP, WAV, MP3 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

Choose a voice memo

Off the phone

Get the memo onto this device.

Open this page on the phone that made the memo, or move the file to a computer and choose it there.

From an iPhone.

Voice Memos saves an audio file, usually M4A. The M4A to MP3 page has the steps for getting a memo out of the app, including the Options step on iOS 27.

From an Android phone.

Share the recording from its app to email, a cloud drive or a files app, then choose it on this page. An AMR memo does not open in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, so the check cannot read it there; the try can still send it whole.

A voicemail instead.

A voicemail is saved from the Phone app. Save a voicemail has the steps for iPhone and Android.

How it works

What the repair does on a memo.

The check in your browser looks for clipping, dropouts, mains hum, background noise, muffled or phone audio and a very quiet recording, and says when it hears each one. The try repairs the first 20 seconds on Solipsium's server and lists a reason for each step. A steady noise floor gets Full-band speech cleanup, and the result reads: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

Hum from a charger.

A phone charging from the mains while it records can pick up hum. Hum is labelled when the lines at 50 or 60 Hz and its multiples stand 10 dB over the frequencies around them. It is notched out in bands 3 Hz wide: the first four harmonics always, and higher ones up to the 24th where they stand 8 dB over their neighbours. The result reads: “Mains hum was found, so it is notched out before any cleanup.”

Clipped peaks.

A phone held close to a loud voice flattens the loudest peaks. Flat tops up to 10 ms long are partly raised back from the undamaged samples around them, never more than 2.3 dB over the clip level. A top that is unsafe to raise is left exactly as it was.

Holes of silence.

Holes of exact digital silence up to 100 ms are filled by continuing the voice's pitch from each side, and the fill is labelled an estimate. Longer holes are left and counted. The result reads: “Short holes of lost audio were found, so they are filled from nearby sound.”

A phone call's narrow sound.

A memo recorded from a call can stop under about 5.4 kHz, as a phone line does. When nothing else is wrong, the AP-BWE model rebuilds the treble and keeps the sound below 4 kHz as it was. The result reads: “Little sound was found above 4 kHz, like a phone line. The treble is rebuilt from the sound below it, which is kept as it was. What is added is inferred.” With steady noise as well, gentle cleanup runs first, then the rebuild.

Solipsium's free try is built for speech. The noise cleanup can take music and ambience with the noise.

Questions

About voice memos.

Why will my Android memo not open here?

Chrome, Edge and Firefox cannot open AMR sound, which AMR files and some 3GP files carry, so in those browsers the check cannot read the memo. The try can still send the file whole, up to 30 minutes and 25 MB; Solipsium's server opens it and keeps only its first 20 seconds. A 3GP file with AAC sound opens in Chrome and Edge.

It was recorded in a pocket. Will it sound clearer?

A pocket dulls the treble. The treble rebuild runs only when the sound stops under about 5.4 kHz, as on a phone line, or between about 8.3 and 11 kHz, as in a file saved at 16 kHz, and nothing else was found except steady noise. A dull memo whose sound reaches past 11 kHz, or stops between 5.4 and 8.3 kHz, gets no rebuild; hum, clipped peaks and holes are still repaired. In the editor, a free account can run AudioSR on a passage of up to 60 seconds, and what it adds is inferred.

Can I convert it to MP3 too?

The M4A to MP3 converter turns an iPhone memo into an MP3 or a WAV in your browser. Opus to MP3 does the same for a WhatsApp voice note.

What if the memo is longer than five minutes?

The check reads up to five minutes. A longer memo, up to 30 minutes and 25 MB, can still be sent whole for the try. To hear a different passage, cut it out with the audio trimmer and drop that. For the whole memo, make a free account: the editor imports recordings of up to 30 minutes and 1 GB.

Is my memo uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
