SOLIPSIUM Super resolution audio engine

Dictaphones

Clean up a dictaphone or digital voice recorder file.

Copy the file off the recorder and drop it here. Solipsium measures its noise, hum and where its sound stops before it changes anything.

Drop a recorder file here

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, WMA, M4A and more, up to five minutes for the check.

The file

What your recorder saved.

Connect the recorder by USB; most show up as a drive with a folder of recordings.

  1. MP3 and WAV.

These open in every browser, and the check reads them here.

  2. WMA.

WMA files do not open in any browser, so the check cannot read them. The try can still send the file whole, up to 25 MB, and Solipsium's server opens it.

  3. DSS and DS2.

These dictation formats open in neither the browser nor Solipsium's server. Convert them to WAV or MP3 with the recorder maker's software first.

Fault by fault

What a recorder on a table hears, and what is repaired.

The try repairs the first 20 seconds on Solipsium's server and lists a reason for each step.

A low quality mode.

A long-play setting can record at a low rate. Sound that stops under about 5.4 kHz, with nothing else found, gets its treble rebuilt: “Little sound was found above 4 kHz, like a phone line. The treble is rebuilt from the sound below it, which is kept as it was. What is added is inferred.”

The room.

A recorder in the middle of a table hears every fan and vent. A steady floor within 26 dB of the voice gets Full-band speech cleanup, a speech model that keeps the voice's full range and lowers what surrounds it. The result reads: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

Other voices.

In a meeting, voices behind the nearest speaker get speech cleanup: “Other voices seem to sit behind the speaker, so speech cleanup is used.”

Handling noise.

Picking the recorder up thumps the microphone. A single thump is not a fault the try measures; in the editor, a box on the spectrum can turn one down.

Questions

About voice recorder files.

A microcassette dictaphone?

Capture the tape first, as the cassette tape page describes for any tape, then drop the file here.

Which quality setting should I record in?

The highest your recorder offers, ideally a WAV or a high bitrate MP3. A long-play mode saves space by keeping less of the voice.

Is the rebuilt treble my voice?

No. It is predicted from the sound below it and labelled inferred.

A long dictation?

The check in your browser reads up to five minutes, and the editor imports up to 30 minutes and 1 GB at a time with a free account. Cut a longer recording into parts with the audio splitter and repair each part.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
