SOLIPSIUM Super resolution audio engine

Free video tool

Sharpen a soft video at its own size, on your graphics chip.

Your browser adds contrast along the edges in every frame and writes a new MP4 the same size as the original. The video is not uploaded, and there is no watermark and no account. The sound is kept.

It is sharpened in your browser. The video is not uploaded.

MP4 or WebM, up to 1920 x 1080, 60 frames a second and 30 minutes.

How it works

Contrast along edges, frame by frame.

The page runs RCAS, the sharpener from AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 1 that the video enhancer offers as Sharpen edges, on each frame at its own size. Chrome and Edge run it on your graphics chip and write the video themselves, so sharpening needs no upload.

Mild or Strong.

Both lift the contrast where a darker area meets a lighter one, Strong more than Mild. Where the sharpener finds fine grain it uses as little as half its strength, so edges get more of the effect than grain does.

Preview a frame first.

The page sharpens the middle of one frame a third of the way in, at its own pixels, and sets it beside the frame as it is, with a divider you drag between them. Any bright or dark lines along edges show there before you write the whole video.

The new file.

It is H.264 video in MP4, or VP9 in MP4 where the browser has no H.264 encoder, at the original size, and its name is your video's name followed by the word sharpened. The sound is copied packet for packet with no new compression. Vorbis and old u-law or 8-bit sound are converted instead, and the page says so.

See what the sound needs.

The quick check listens to the first five minutes of the sound for clipping, dropouts, hum, background noise and muffled sound. You can then hear its first 20 seconds repaired, with no account. Solipsium's free try is built for speech.

Questions

Before you sharpen a video.

Can it unblur a video?

No. It raises the contrast along edges that are already in the frame, which makes a slightly soft video look sharper. It cannot bring an out of focus shot back into focus or undo motion blur.

Why do edges get bright or dark lines?

The sharpener makes the light side of an edge lighter and the dark side darker. On a strong edge that can show as a thin bright or dark line, and on a grainy video it makes the grain easier to see. Preview a frame, and choose Mild if Strong draws lines.

How strong are Mild and Strong?

Mild is half of the sharpener's strongest setting, and Strong is about seven tenths of it. Start with Mild and preview a frame. Choose Strong for a video that still looks soft.

Should I enlarge it instead?

If the video is small, yes. The video enhancer doubles the width and height of a video up to 1920 x 1080 with a neural network and can sharpen it in the same pass. This page keeps the video's size.

Which browsers can sharpen a video?

Chrome and Edge on a desktop or laptop whose graphics chip supports WebGPU. A browser that cannot do it says so as soon as this page opens, and can still check the sound.

How large a video can it take?

Up to 1920 x 1080 either way up, 60 frames a second and 30 minutes, in ordinary 8-bit colour. In Chrome and Edge the new video is written straight into a file you choose; a browser that cannot do that keeps it in its storage for this site, or in its memory, which holds about 200 MB.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser reads the video, your graphics chip sharpens each frame, and the new file is written on your device. Pressing Sharpen sends Solipsium one count with the strength you chose and the video format your browser writes, and nothing from the video, not even its name. Only if you press Repair the first 20 seconds does any sound go to Solipsium, never the picture, and Solipsium keeps only its first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour.

Make an old recording easier to hear.

Solipsium works on voicemails, voice memos, answering machine tapes and camcorder audio.
