What a gate does
A gate opens for sound over its threshold and closes when the sound drops under it.
Room noise, a hum or a fan in the pauses goes quiet.
While someone talks the gate is open, so the noise under the voice stays.
Unlike removing silence, nothing is cut out: the pauses stay as long as they were.
How it works
The loudest sample of every 10 ms decides whether the gate is open there.
Pick one under the quietest word and over the noise in the pauses. -45 dBFS suits a voice recorded at a normal level.
Silence, or 20 dB down, which keeps a little of the room so the gaps sound natural.
It opens 5 ms early, so a word starts at full level, stays open 150 ms after it, and closes over 120 ms.
Questions
The threshold is too high. Choose a lower one, or turn down by 20 dB rather than to silence, so a soft ending stays audible.
The threshold is under the noise. Choose a higher one.
A gate quiets the pauses. The repair on the home page lowers steady noise under the words too, and measures the noise first. They can be used one after the other.
Remove silence cuts pauses longer than a length you choose down to a short gap.
No. Your browser opens the file and does the work on this device; nothing is sent to Solipsium. Checking a recording for noise, hum and clipping is another page: the home page checks it in your browser too.
