Find every pause longer than a length you choose and cut it down to a short gap, in your browser. The pauses are listed with their times before you save an MP3 or a WAV.

Your browser finds the pauses on this device. It stays on your device until you ask for a repair.
MP3, M4A, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus and more, up to 30 minutes or 200 MB.
The quiet floor is the level the quietest tenth of the recording sits under. Sound under the pause level counts as quiet. Raise the level if a pause is missed; lower it if a listed pause holds soft speech.
Half the gap stays on each side of every cut, and each join fades out over 20 ms and back in over 20 ms.
Shortening the pauses does not clean the sound. Solipsium's free try is built for speech: the check below looks at your original file in your browser for background noise, hum, clipping, dropouts and muffled sound, and you can hear the first 20 seconds of a voice recording repaired with no account.
After signing up, drop the same file into the editor to repair all of it.

How it works
A pause is a stretch quieter than the pause level that lasts at least the minimum pause you chose. Nothing is cut until you save.
It is decoded on this device at 44.1 kHz, the sample rate of a CD, and its level is read every 10 ms with all channels together.
Stretches of digital silence are left out of the floor, so a silent lead-in does not drag it under the room's own sound. The pause level sits 6 to 24 dB above the floor: 12 dB unless you move the slider.
The cut comes out of the middle of the pause, so the fades at the join fall on the quiet that stays. MP3 files are made with lamejs, a JavaScript port of LAME, under the GNU LGPL. A WAV holds 16-bit samples and is not compressed.
Questions
It cuts only inside a pause, never closer than 0.1 s to the sound on either side. A soft word that sits under the pause level counts as quiet, so read the list before you save. If a listed pause holds speech, lower the pause level or raise the minimum pause.
With no gap, one sentence runs straight into the next and there is no room for a breath. The default keeps 0.5 s. Choose 0.2 s for a quicker pace or 1 s for a slower one.
Background noise raises the quiet floor, and the pause level rises with it. The noise stays in the gaps that are kept. Remove background noise checks a recording for it and repairs the first 20 seconds for you to hear.
It is made for speech. In a song, a quiet passage or a fading note under the pause level would be cut like a pause.
No. Those are dropouts, where the sound itself is missing, and cutting them out would join the words on either side. Fix audio dropouts is the page for them.
Not to shorten it. Your browser finds and cuts the pauses on this device, and Solipsium's check of the recording runs in your browser too. Audio is sent only if you press Repair the first 20 seconds. For a mono or stereo recording of up to five minutes, only its first 20 seconds leave this browser; Solipsium repairs them on its server and deletes them within an hour. A longer file would have to go whole, so the try is offered for it only under 25 MB, and Solipsium keeps just its first 20 seconds.
The check runs in your browser and lists the background noise, hum and clipping it finds. For a voice recording, you can hear its first 20 seconds repaired.
The check and the 20-second try need no account.
