Slow, so it never pumps.
The gain glides over about half a second, and starts before a change rather than after it.

How it works
The level is read every 50 ms, and each passage is moved towards the average of the passages that are not pauses.
The gain glides over about half a second, and starts before a change rather than after it.
A stretch 30 dB or more under the loudest is a pause; it keeps the gain before it, so its noise is not raised.
Afterwards the free tools' limiter holds the peaks under -1 dBFS, and the result says for how long it worked.
When to use it
Levelling helps where the loudness changes between passages, not within a word.
The near voice comes down, the far one comes up.
A speaker who turns away and back stays at one level.
Level first, then normalize the result to the target you need.
Questions
Not in the pauses, which keep the gain before them. Under a quiet voice that is raised, the noise under it comes up with it.
Start with 6. Use 12 when one voice is much quieter than the other.
It works like a slow one: it moves whole passages, not single words, so the voice keeps its own rise and fall.
About as loud as the recording's average was. The loudness checker measures it.
No. Your browser opens the file and does the work on this device; nothing is sent to Solipsium. Checking a recording for noise, hum and clipping is another page: the home page checks it in your browser too.
