Free audio tool

Convert any audio file your browser opens to MP3 or WAV, and see which browser opens which format.

Drop a FLAC, an AIFF, a 3GP or another audio file, and your browser saves it as an MP3 or a WAV on this device. The table below names the browsers that open each format.

Formats

Which browser opens which format.

Each browser carries its own decoders, so a file that opens in Safari can fail in Chrome. These rows come from the browsers' own source code. The last column says whether Solipsium's server opens the format when your browser cannot.

How it works

Your browser decodes the file and saves an MP3 or a WAV.

The file is opened and saved on this device, so which formats open depends on your browser.

Your browser opens the file.

The sound is decoded by your browser's own decoder at 44.1 kHz, the sample rate of a CD.

It is compressed as MP3.

The MP3 has a constant bitrate: 192 kbps unless you choose 128, 256 or 320. A higher bitrate keeps more of the sound in a larger file. MP3 files are made with lamejs, a JavaScript port of LAME, under the GNU LGPL.

Or keep a WAV.

A WAV keeps the decoded sound as 16-bit samples, in a much larger file than the MP3. Choose it if you will edit the recording.

Questions

Before you convert.

Which formats open in Chrome?

WAV, MP3, FLAC, Ogg, Opus, WebM and MOV, and M4A or MP4 with AAC sound. A 3GP opens only when its sound is AAC. AIFF, CAF, AMR and WMA do not open in Chrome. The table above has a row for each.

An AIFF or CAF file?

Both open only in Safari. Open this page in Safari on a Mac or an iPhone and convert the file there. Solipsium's server does not open AIFF or CAF, so the try takes one only in Safari.

An AMR voicemail?

AMR does not open in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, so this page cannot convert it there. Solipsium's server opens it. The try sends the file whole, up to 25 MB, and repairs its first 20 seconds; a free account's editor opens the whole recording and exports a WAV. Save a voicemail shows how to get one off a phone.

A WMA file?

No browser opens WMA. Solipsium's server does, so the try and a free account's editor take it the same way they take AMR.

Does converting lose quality?

An MP3 leaves some sound out to save space, so converting a FLAC or a WAV loses a little; 192 kbps or more keeps the loss small. An Ogg or an M4A is already compressed, and the MP3 compresses it again in its own way, so a little more is lost. A WAV is not compressed again.

Is my file uploaded?

Not to convert it. Your browser opens and converts the file on this device, and Solipsium's check of the recording runs in your browser too. Audio is sent only if you press Repair the first 20 seconds. For a mono or stereo recording of up to five minutes, only its first 20 seconds leave this browser; Solipsium repairs them on its server and deletes them within an hour. A longer file, or one this browser cannot open, has to go whole, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB, and Solipsium keeps just its first 20 seconds.

Hard to hear the voice?

Drop the recording on the home page. The check runs in your browser, and you can hear its first 20 seconds repaired with no account.

Check a recording

The check and the 20-second try need no account.
