Depositions and hearings

Clean up a copy of a deposition or hearing recording.

Drop a copy of the recording here. Solipsium measures its noise, hum, holes and where its sound stops, and says what a repair would change.

Drop a copy of the recording

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

Choose a recording

Before anything

Keep the original exactly as it is.

A repair makes a new, changed copy. Whatever the recording is for, the original should stay as it was made.

  1. Work on a copy.

Copy the file and drop the copy. Nothing on this page changes the file on your device.

  2. Name the repaired copy as one.

Save the result under a name that says it was repaired, so nobody takes it for the original.

  3. Know what was added.

Most repairs only lower or notch sound. A treble rebuild adds sound predicted from the rest, and the result says so: what is added is inferred.

Fault by fault

What a hearing room brings, and what is repaired.

The check in your browser names background noise, mains hum, clipping, dropouts and muffled sound, with their times. The try repairs the first 20 seconds and lists a reason for each step.

Air handling.

A building's ventilation is a steady floor. A steady floor within 26 dB of the voice gets Full-band speech cleanup, a speech model that keeps the voice's full range and lowers what surrounds it. The result reads: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

Hum from the room's system.

Microphones run through an amplifier can carry mains hum, notched out in bands 3 Hz wide: “Mains hum was found, so it is notched out before any cleanup.”

Someone on the phone.

A recording made down a phone line has little sound above about 4 kHz. When the whole recording stops under about 5.4 kHz and nothing else is found, the treble is rebuilt, and the result reads: “Little sound was found above 4 kHz, like a phone line. The treble is rebuilt from the sound below it, which is kept as it was. What is added is inferred.” A room recording with one caller on a speaker reaches higher, and nothing is rebuilt.

A speaker far from the microphone.

Cleanup can lower the noise around a distant voice. It cannot recover words the microphone did not pick up.

Questions

About legal recordings.

Can a repaired copy replace the original?

No repair here is meant to. The repaired copy is a different file; keep the original unchanged and ask whoever relies on the record which copy they need.

Does the repair add words?

No step writes speech. On a phone-line recording, the treble rebuild adds sound above 4 kHz predicted from the sound below it, and the result labels it inferred. Keep the original for anything that has to be exact.

Does Solipsium write a transcript?

No. It repairs the sound only.

Can I hear exactly what changed?

Yes. The try plays Original and Repaired on one clock at the same level, so you can switch between them on the same words, and it lists a reason for each step.

What happens to a private recording?

The check runs in your browser and sends nothing. The try sends 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. With a free account, recordings you import are private to your account, and Solipsium does not train models on them.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
