Room echo

Reduce the echo of a room in a voice recording.

Drop a recording made in a hall, a kitchen or a bare room. Solipsium measures what else is wrong first, because that decides whether echo reduction runs.

Drop an echoing recording

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

How it works

Echo gets its own reducer.

Echo gets its own reducer, which works through longer recordings about 20 seconds at a time.

When it runs.

Echo reduction runs only when echo is the one thing found, with no steady noise, music, hum, clipping or muffled sound beside it. On a longer recording it works about 20 seconds at a time. The result then reads: “Room echo seems to blur the speech, so echo reduction is used.”

When noise comes first.

When the recording also has a steady noise floor, Full-band speech cleanup runs and echo reduction does not: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

In the editor.

With a free account, Custom cleanup sets each part on its own. Its description reads: “Adjust noise, room echo and passage volume separately.”

Kinds of echo

A room's echo, and the others.

The reducer is for the tail a room leaves after each word.

A bare room.

Hard walls, a hard floor and no soft furniture ring after every word. This is the echo the reducer is for.

Your own voice on a call.

On a speakerphone call, the other side can hear themselves back. That echo is a copy of a voice, not a room, and the reducer is not built for it.

Before the next take.

Move closer to the microphone, record in a room with curtains, a rug or a full wardrobe, and point the microphone away from bare walls.

Questions

About echo.

Why did echo reduction not run?

It runs only when echo is the one thing found. With steady noise, music, hum, clipping or muffled sound beside it, those are treated instead, and the try lists its reasons beside the result.

Will all the echo go?

It is reduced, not removed. Switch between Original and Repaired as they play, on one clock, and listen to the ends of words, where the room rings longest.

Does the check in my browser find echo?

No. It names clipping, dropouts, mains hum, background noise, muffled sound and a very quiet recording. Echo is measured on Solipsium's server when you press Repair the first 20 seconds.

Echo in a video?

Drop the video file, as MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM. The check reads its sound when your browser can open it, and with a free account the editor's video export keeps the original picture with the repaired sound.

Echo and other people talking?

Voices behind the speaker bring speech cleanup instead: “Other voices seem to sit behind the speaker, so speech cleanup is used.”

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
