Mouth clicks

Remove mouth clicks from a voice recording.

A dry mouth leaves small clicks between and inside words. Drop the recording to check it, and read below where the clicks are handled.

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

What the try does

Too few to count as crackle.

The try's click repair runs on crackle: ticks that keep coming through every part of a recording, the pauses included.

The crackle label.

The repair labels crackle only when short events come at least four times a second in every five-second stretch, and also in the middle of its pauses. Mouth clicks come now and then, so they do not reach it.

So the try leaves them.

The 20 seconds can come back with the clicks as they were, and with any noise, hum or clipping repaired.

The editor's Clicks button.

In the editor, select a passage and press Clicks: Remove clicks and crackle redraws every short spike it detects from the samples around it.

In the editor

Where you hear them, and only there.

Its own note says “in clean audio it can find spikes that are not clicks and change them too, so use it only where you hear clicks.”

  1. Select the passage.

Pick the stretch where the clicks are, not the whole chapter: in clean speech the button can change spikes that are not clicks.

  2. Press Clicks.

Each short spike it finds is redrawn from the samples on either side.

  3. Compare before you keep it.

Switch between Original and Repaired on the same words, and listen to the consonants: a t or a k is a short sound too.

Questions

About mouth clicks.

A click the button missed?

A longer click, such as a lip smack, is more than a short spike. In the editor, with a free account, drag a box on the spectrum over the time and pitch of a sound, then turn it down or redraw it from the sound around it. Nothing outside the box changes.

How do I get fewer clicks next time?

Drink water before and during a session, and keep the microphone a little to one side of your mouth.

Is this for audiobooks?

It works on any voice recording. Clean up audiobook narration covers room noise and ACX's numbers as well.

Clicks all through an old record?

That is crackle, with a repair of its own in the free try: remove crackle from audio.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
