Plosives

Remove the pops of p and b from a voice recording.

A p or b pushes a puff of air into the microphone, and you hear a deep thump. Drop the recording to check it, and read how the editor treats pops.

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

Filtered where the tool finds one.

A deep thump from a p or b hitting the microphone is filtered where the tool finds one.

What it does.

The editor describes the pop tool in its own words: “Finds the low thump of a p or b hitting the microphone and high-passes the moments where it finds one.” The rest of the recording is not filtered.

What was measured.

On October 3 we added made-up pops to 474 versions of 80 recordings: 125 measured better and 2 worse, and the sound around the pops moved further from the original in 424. In 10 of the 80 recordings with no pops added, part of the sound measured worse.

Not in the free try.

The 20-second try does not run the pop tool. It is in the editor, with a free account, on a passage or the whole recording.

Next time

Stop the air before it reaches the microphone.

A pop is easier to keep out than to take out.

  1. Use a pop filter.

A mesh or foam screen a few centimetres in front of the microphone breaks up the puff of air.

  2. Speak past the microphone.

Turn the microphone a little to one side, so the air from a p goes past it rather than into it.

  3. Keep a hand's width away.

Very close to the microphone, every p lands as a thump. A little more distance softens it.

Questions

About plosives.

Why does the sound near a pop change?

The filter works on the moment of the pop, and in the October 3 test the sound around the pops moved further from the original in 424 of 474 versions. Compare Original and Repaired on the same words before you keep it.

Will it cut the bass of my voice?

Only at the moments it finds a pop. Elsewhere the voice is not filtered.

Is a pop the same as wind?

Both are air on the microphone. Wind keeps going and makes rumble, which the free try measures: remove rumble and wind noise.

What does the free try repair?

Noise, hum, clipping, holes, crackle, rumble, echo and a phone line's lost treble, each when it is measured. Drop the recording above to hear its first 20 seconds.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
