Does it need a sample of the noise?
No. The repair measures the noise floor in the recording's quietest moments, so you do not mark a stretch of room tone first.
Why was my hiss left alone?
On a recording that does not clip, hiss more than 26 dB under the loud parts is not labelled, and the listening model switches speech cleanup on only when it hears damage the cleanup clearly reduces. Otherwise the 20 seconds come back as they were, with this summary: “Nothing needed repairing: the measured repairs would not improve these 20 seconds, so they are left exactly as they were.” When the recording also clips, the clipping repair runs and no cleanup follows it. In the editor you can still run Full-band speech cleanup on it yourself.
Will it dull the voice?
It can. The editor's description of this cleanup reads: “Targets hiss in speech. Check quiet or distant voices; may remove music and ambience.” Switch between Original and Repaired as they play, on one clock, and keep the original if the voice sounds worse.
Static that clicks and crackles?
That is crackle, a different fault with its own repair: remove crackle from audio.
Hiss under music?
Solipsium's free try is built for speech. Full-band speech cleanup may remove music along with the hiss; where held musical tones are found under the noise, Gentle cleanup runs instead.
Is my recording uploaded?
Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
