A sudden noise

Turn down one cough, bark or door slam in a recording.

A good take with one bad moment. Drop it to check the rest of the recording, then mark the moment with a box on the spectrum in the editor.

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

A box on the spectrum.

In the editor, with a free account, drag a box on the spectrum over the time and pitch of a sound, then turn it down or redraw it from the sound around it. Nothing outside the box changes.

  1. Find the sound.

Open the Spectrum view. A cough or a bark shows as a bright patch; a door slam as a tall stripe; a phone's buzz as a few bright lines.

  2. Draw the box.

Cover the patch in time and in pitch, and no more. The tool's description reads: “Edits one box of time and frequency: the selected passage, between two frequencies. Attenuate lowers everything in the box. Replace redraws its loudness from the sound on either side, which is an estimate. Drag a box on the Spectrum view to set the range.”

  3. Attenuate or replace.

Attenuate lowers everything in the box. Replace redraws its loudness from the sound on either side, which is an estimate. Compare both with the original.

What to expect

Cleanest on a sound apart from the words.

A box takes out whatever is inside it, the voice included.

Between words.

A sound in a pause comes out cleanly: there is nothing else in the box.

Over a word.

A cough over a word shares the box with the voice. Attenuate lowers both; Replace draws an estimate. Listen closely to that word.

Many of them.

The box works one moment at a time. A sound that keeps coming back, such as traffic or typing, is a job for the steady repairs or for a new take.

Questions

About single sounds.

Does the free try remove a cough?

No. The try measures and repairs steady noise, hum, clipping, holes, crackle, rumble and echo. A single sound is left for the box in the editor.

Can I undo a box?

Every repair starts from the original recording, so you can compare it with the original and keep or discard it.

A phone's buzz on the recording?

A phone near a microphone can buzz in short bursts. It is not mains hum, so the hum notches do not touch it; a box over each burst can.

How long can the recording be?

The editor imports up to 30 minutes and 1 GB at a time with a free account.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
