SOLIPSIUM Super resolution audio engine

Field recordings

Clean up a field recording without losing its ambience.

Drop the recording here. The check names hum, clipping and holes in your browser; this page says which repairs leave birdsong, water and wind alone.

Drop a field recording

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

Before you repair

The free try is built for speech.

Its cleanup keeps a voice and lowers what surrounds it. In a field recording, what surrounds the voice may be the point.

Cleanup removes ambience.

The editor's note on Full-band speech cleanup reads: “Targets hiss in speech. Check quiet or distant voices; may remove music and ambience.” On a recording of a place, that ambience is the recording.

Repairs that leave it.

Hum notches, the clipping repair and the gap filler change only what they measure. In the editor, with a free account, each can run on its own.

The try decides for itself.

The 20-second try picks its own steps. Read its reasons, and use the editor's single repairs when it chose a cleanup you do not want.

Fault by fault

What a field recorder brings.

Each repair here runs only when its fault is measured.

Hum near power lines or mains equipment.

Lines at 50 or 60 Hz and their multiples are notched: “Mains hum was found, so it is notched out before any cleanup.”

An overloaded input.

Flat tops up to 10 ms long are partly raised back from the undamaged samples around them, never more than 2.3 dB over the clip level. A top that is unsafe to raise is left exactly as it was.

A card that skipped.

Holes of exact silence up to 100 ms are filled: “Short holes of lost audio were found, so they are filled from nearby sound.”

Handling and wind.

Handling noise that keeps going counts as rumble. A single knock is too short to be labelled, and stays.

Questions

About field recordings.

An interview recorded outdoors?

Then the voice is the subject, and the try's cleanup suits it: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

Can it remove a plane or a car from birdsong?

Not as a steady repair. In the editor, a box on the spectrum can turn one passing sound down where you mark it.

Will the hum notches change the sound?

A little: they also cut the recording's own sound at the hum's frequencies, in bands 3 Hz wide.

A long recording?

The check in your browser reads up to five minutes, and the editor imports up to 30 minutes and 1 GB at a time with a free account. Cut a longer recording into parts with the audio splitter and repair each part.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
