Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

Where the sound is

Find the closest recording first.

A wedding is often recorded more than once. The copy nearest the speaker's mouth gives the repair the most to work with.

  1. A lapel recorder.

A small recorder clipped to the groom or the officiant hears the vows up close. If one ran, use its file, and add it to the video afterwards with add audio to video.

  2. The venue's or the DJ's desk.

The microphones for the speeches go through a desk. A recording from it has the voice clean and the room low.

  3. The camera's own microphone.

It hears everything at once: the room, the guests and the wind. It is the copy to repair when nothing closer was recorded.

Fault by fault

What a wedding brings, and what is repaired.

The check reads the video's sound in your browser and names background noise, mains hum, clipping, dropouts and muffled sound. The try repairs the first 20 seconds on Solipsium's server.

Wind at an outdoor ceremony.

Steady low wind is rumble. When it is loud next to the voice and nothing else brought a cleanup, the low band is turned down last: “Low rumble was found under the voice, so after every other step the steady noise below 300 Hz is turned down towards the recording's own quiet level, with one fixed curve for the whole recording; where the recording is much louder than the rumble at a frequency, that frequency keeps nearly all of its level.” A gust that overloaded the microphone is distortion, which this step cannot undo.

Hum from the venue.

Lighting, a dimmer or the sound system can put mains hum under the speeches. Lines at 50 or 60 Hz and their multiples are notched out in bands 3 Hz wide: “Mains hum was found, so it is notched out before any cleanup.”

Guests talking.

Voices behind the speaker get speech cleanup: “Other voices seem to sit behind the speaker, so speech cleanup is used.”

A loud toast that clipped.

A cheer or a speech too close to the microphone flattens the peaks. Flat tops up to 10 ms long are partly raised back from the undamaged samples around them, never more than 2.3 dB over the clip level. A top that is unsafe to raise is left exactly as it was.

Music under the speeches.

Solipsium's free try is built for speech, and its cleanup may remove music along with the noise. In the editor, Rebalance finds the voice with a speech model and turns the rest down; in an October 5 test, the music usually went down by less than the setting asked.

Questions

About wedding videos.

Does it change the picture?

No. With a free account, the editor repairs the sound of the whole video while you watch the picture in sync, and a video export keeps the original picture with the repaired track as AAC, in MP4 or MKV.

The video runs over an hour.

The editor takes videos of up to 30 minutes and 1 GB. Cut the ceremony and each speech out with the video trimmer, or take the sound out with extract audio from video and split it into parts.

The vows are barely there on the camera.

Cleanup lowers the noise around a quiet voice, but it cannot make a voice the microphone hardly picked up clear. Ask the guests: a phone near the front often has the vows closer than the camera.

Can it remove the rustle of a lapel microphone?

No. Clothing rubbing on the microphone is a short, changing sound, not one of the faults the repair measures, so it stays as it is.

Can I hear the result before I make an account?

Yes. Drop the video above: when your browser can open it and it runs five minutes or less, the try repairs the first 20 seconds of its sound. A longer video goes whole and is offered the try only up to 25 MB, so for a long video drop a short clip cut with the video trimmer.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
