Air conditioning

Remove air conditioner and heating noise from a recording.

Drop a recording made in a room with the air conditioning, a heater or a vent running. Solipsium measures each part of that noise before it lowers any of it.

Drop a recording here

Solipsium checks it in your browser for clipping, hum and noise, without uploading it. It can then repair the first 20 seconds for you to hear, with no account.

WAV, MP3, M4A, MP4 and more, up to five minutes for the check.

What a unit makes

Three sounds at once.

An air conditioner blows air, shakes the building and runs a motor on the mains. Each one is measured and treated on its own.

The rush of air.

A broad, steady rush like a fan's. The repair labels steady noise when the quiet moments have a flat spectrum, hold steady within 7.5 dB and sit 26 dB or less under the loud parts. A steady floor within 26 dB of the voice gets Full-band speech cleanup, a speech model that keeps the voice's full range and lowers what surrounds it. The result reads: “A steady noise floor was found, so it is removed.”

A low rumble.

The unit and the ducts shake the room. The repair labels rumble when the band from 30 to 80 Hz stands 10 dB over the band from 150 to 400 Hz, is loud enough against the voice to be heard, and fills the band evenly. It is turned down last, and only when no cleanup ran before it.

A motor's hum.

A motor running on the mains can add lines at 50 or 60 Hz and their multiples. Where they stand 10 dB over the frequencies around them, they are notched out in bands 3 Hz wide: “Mains hum was found, so it is notched out before any cleanup.”

When it switches on

A unit that starts and stops.

A compressor that switches on halfway through changes the noise under the voice.

The floor moves.

A floor that changes level by more than 7.5 dB between the quiet moments is not labelled steady. A listening model then decides; when it hears damage the cleanup clearly reduces, the result reads: “Nothing was measured wrong, but a listening model heard damage that speech cleanup clearly reduced, so speech cleanup is used.”

Hum that comes and goes.

Hum heard only while the unit runs, in spans of 3 seconds or more, is notched only where it plays: “Mains hum was found in parts of the recording, so it is notched out there; the voice is put back wherever the notches removed nothing.”

Before the next take.

Switch the unit off while you record, or record in a room away from the vent. A recording with no noise in it needs no cleanup.

Questions

About air conditioning noise.

Will it make the voice sound thin?

It can. The editor's note on this cleanup reads: “Targets hiss in speech. Check quiet or distant voices; may remove music and ambience.” Compare Original and Repaired on the same words.

Why was the rumble not turned down?

The rumble step is skipped when a cleanup ran before it, since the cleanup lowers the low band too, and on a recording labelled clipping or music. Rumble that is faint next to the voice is not labelled at all.

Does the check in my browser find all three?

It names background noise and mains hum, with their times. Rumble is measured on Solipsium's server when you press Repair the first 20 seconds.

A heater's tick or a vent's rattle?

A short, changing sound is not steady noise. In the editor, with a free account, a box on the spectrum can turn one such sound down where you mark it.

Is my recording uploaded?

Not for the check, which runs in your browser. Pressing Repair the first 20 seconds sends those 20 seconds; when your browser could not open the file, or it runs over five minutes, the file itself goes to Solipsium's server, so the try is offered for it only up to 25 MB. Solipsium keeps only the first 20 seconds and deletes them within an hour. If you are signed in, a file you drop or choose is uploaded to your account and opens in the editor instead. The privacy notice has the rest.
