Fade a recording in and out.

Choose how long the start rises from silence and the end falls back to it, and the shape of the curve. Your browser does it and saves an MP3 or a WAV. Nothing is uploaded.

The curves

Three ways to rise and fall.

Each curve takes the same time; they differ in where the change happens.

Straight line.

The level rises by the same amount every moment. Simple, though the ear hears most of it near the quiet end.

Smooth.

It starts and ends gently, with the change in the middle. A good choice for music and for speech that starts at once.

Equal power.

It rises quickly at first. It keeps the loudness even where two sounds cross, which is why the loop tool uses it at its joins.

How it works

Only the ends change.

Everything between the two fades is left exactly as it was.

  1. Choose the lengths.

Up to 30 seconds each. On a short file, each fade is held to half its length, so the two never overlap.

  2. Add the fades.

Your browser multiplies the start and the end by the curve. The rest is copied sample for sample.

  3. Save it.

As an MP3 at 192 kbps, or as a 16-bit WAV at the file's own sample rate.

Questions

About fades.

Can I cut the recording too?

Yes, with the audio trimmer, which keeps the part you choose and allows a fade of up to 5 seconds at each end. Trim first, then fade here for longer fades.

Fade only the end?

Set the fade in to 0. A fade of 0 seconds leaves that end as it was.

Which length for a song?

A fade out of 5 to 10 seconds suits most songs; a podcast's music bed often fades over 2 or 3. Listen to the result before you save it.

Will it change the loudness?

Only at the ends. The level between the fades is not touched.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. Your browser opens the file and does the work on this device; nothing is sent to Solipsium. Checking a recording for noise, hum and clipping is another page: the home page checks it in your browser too.

Hiss under the fade?

A fade lowers the hiss with the voice but does not clean it. Drop the recording on the home page to check it for noise, hum and clipping, and hear its first 20 seconds repaired.

Check a recording

The check and the 20-second try need no account.
