Your browser raises your video's sound until its loudest peak reaches -1 dBFS, and a limiter lets you go further while the peaks stay there. You get a new MP4 with the louder sound and the same picture.

Loudness is integrated loudness by ITU-R BS.1770, in LUFS. The loudest peak is the largest sample, in decibels relative to full scale (dBFS).
At +0 dB the loudest peak reaches -1 dBFS, or rises by 40 dB if it started below -41 dBFS. Above that, the limiter turns the sound down around each moment that would pass it, easing in 5 ms before and back up within a quarter of a second.
Both start at the same moment, so switching lands on the same word. They are not matched in loudness, so you hear how much louder it is.
Writing the new video.
The quick check listens to the first five minutes of the louder sound for background noise, hum and clipping, in your browser.
After signing up, import the video into the editor: it repairs the whole sound track and exports the video with its picture kept.
Then import the video into the editor. Scans and short repairs are free.
How it works
Only the sound is decoded and encoded again. The picture's packets move into the new MP4 unchanged.
This page is for your own videos: there is no box for a link. Your browser reads the file and decodes its first sound track.
Its loudest peak and its loudness are read, and the page says how far the sound rises before the limiter is needed.
The slider adds up to 12 dB past the plain level, through the limiter. One gain is used for every channel, so the balance between left and right stays.
The louder sound is encoded as AAC at 192 kbps, or as Opus where the browser has no AAC encoder, and the page says which.
Questions
Turned up far enough, the loudest moments pass the most a file can hold and clip, which sounds harsh and distorted. The limiter turns the sound down for a moment around each peak that would pass -1 dBFS. Pushed a long way, the loudest moments can start to sound squeezed, so play Original and Louder before you make the video.
No. The size, frame rate and colour stay as they were, because the picture is never decoded.
Press Check the louder sound, and the quick check says what it found. You can then hear the louder sound's first 20 seconds repaired, with no account. Solipsium's free try is built for speech.
MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM files your browser can read, up to 10 GB, with an H.264, HEVC, VP9 or AV1 picture. The first sound track is made louder and any others are left out. The new file is always an MP4. In Chrome and Edge it is written straight into a file you choose; another browser keeps it in its storage for this site, or in its memory, which holds about 200 MB.
This page sets the loudest peak. For a loudness number, save the sound with the extract audio page, set it with normalize audio, then put it back under the picture with add audio to video. With a free account, the editor's export can set the loudness to -14, -16 or -23 LUFS.
Not to make it louder. Your browser reads the video, raises its sound and writes the new file on this device, and Solipsium's check of the sound runs in your browser too. Sound is sent only if you press Repair the first 20 seconds. Then only the first 20 seconds of the louder sound leave this browser, never the picture; Solipsium repairs them on its server and deletes them within an hour.
Solipsium works on voicemails, voice memos, answering machine tapes and camcorder audio.
The check and the 20-second try need no account.
